Autumn Blaze Maple

Genus:
Acer
Species: x freemanii
Zone: 5-7b
Type: Deciduous
Final Height: 40-50'
Shape: Upright
branching, broadly oval
Fall Color: Brilliant
scarlet-red, long lasting
Description: A hybrid
between the Red and Silver Maple, it combines the best features of
both. The drought tolerance of Silver Maple and the fall color of the
Red Maple.
When To Plant: Red maples are successfully
planted in the spring or fall.
Where To Plant: Maples like moist, slightly
acid, deep soils. They can adapt to clay soil with adequate moisture
during dry times but need to have good drainage.
How To Plant: Dig the planting site 2-3 times
the diameter of the rootball and the same depth. Water the tree in
thoroughly. Supplemental watering should be available until the tree
is established. We recommend about a 2-3" layer of shredded mulch
around the base of the planting to hold in moisture and prevent weed
growth.
Maintenance: Fertilize in the spring with an
all-purpose tree fertilizer. Water during drought conditions and keep
mulch in place at all times.
More About the Autumn Blaze Maple
Autumn Blaze is a relatively new introduction, and
it lives up to its name! It exhibits brilliant and long la sting
orange-red fall color. This hybrid deserves to be more widely
planted, as it combines the best characteristics of the Red and Silver
Maples.
The Red Maple parent contributes a well-balanced
branching habit. From the Silver Maple it inherited increased
tolerance to drought and poor soil conditions. It can be used in what
are considered 'tough' sites, such as high clay content.
Summer foliage is medium green. Autumn Blaze Maple
has a broadly oval crown at maturity, and can reach approximately
50'-60'.
