Be a Good Hummer Host
Hummingbirds, like butterflies love
flower nectar. They will visit the same flowers again and again. You
can supplement their diet by setting out hummingbird feeders in late
spring, but why not also plant a hummingbird garden? Planting red or
bright orange flowers will attract those hummers!
Below are a few great plants for
hummers:
-
Cardinal flower
-
Honeysuckle
-
Bee Balm
-
Sage
If you do set out feeders don't forget
to keep them filled. Either make your own nectar, (one part sugar to
four parts water) or you can buy it already mixed. Also keep your
feeders clean by washing with hot water about once a week. Don't be
alarmed If you find small insects floating in the feeder between
cleanings. Hummingbirds actually consume small insects as they feed
in flowers.
Quick Tip: To discourage bees and wasps, place a small
amount of vegetable oil around the feeder's feeding holes.
