Cool Season Grasses

Cool season grasses in Oklahoma include fine & thick bladed fescue.  A few of our favorites are Tulsa, Triad & Rebel.  Keep in mind these are general tips for zone 6-7. All watering and mowing recommendations are based on the average environmental conditions. You may need to adjust the recommendations below to better satisfy your particular conditions.


January

  • This is a good time to test your soil. 

  •  If necessary mow at about a 2" mowing height.


February

  • Over-seeding may be done late in the month.

  • Water 1 inch weekly, if needed.

  • Apply pre-emergent weed control late in February. 

  • NOTE: We don't recommend over-seeding if you intend to apply a pre-emergent.

  • Mow at about a 2" mowing height.


March

  • Over-seeding may still be done the first 2 weeks of March.

  • Water 1 inch weekly, if needed.

  • Apply pre-emergent weed control.

  • NOTE: We don't recommend over-seeding if you intend to apply a pre-emergent.

  • Mow at about a 2" mowing height.


April

  • Water 1 inch weekly, if needed.

  • Mow at about a 2" mowing height.


May

  • Water 1-2 inches weekly, if needed.

  • Fertilize with 1 pound of nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft.

  • Apply broadleaf week killers, as necessary.

  • Apply post-emergent grass killers sparingly.

  • Apply post-emergent nutsedge control late in the month.

  • Mow at about a 2.5" mowing height.


June

  • Water 1-2 inches weekly, if needed.

  • Apply broad leafed weed killers, as necessary.

  • Mow at about a 2.5-3" mowing height.


July

  • Water 1-2 inches if needed.

  • Mow at about a 2½-3" mowing height.


August

  • Water 1-2 inches weekly, if needed.

  • Apply pre-emergent weed control late in the month if no overseeding is planned in the fall.

  • Mow at about a 2½-3 mowing height.


September

  • Overseeding may be done late in the month.
  • Fertilize with 1 pound of nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft.
  • Water 1-2 inches weekly, if needed.
  • Apply pre-emergent weed control.
  • Apply broad leaf week killers, as necessary.
  • NOTE: We don't recommend over-seeding if you intend to apply a pre-emergent.
  • Mow at about a 2.5-3" mowing height.

October

  • Overseeding may be done early to mid month.

  • Water 1 inch weekly, if needed.

  • Apply pre-emergent weed control early in the month.

  • Apply post-emergent weed killers, as necessary.

  • NOTE: We don't recommend over-seeding if you intend to apply a pre-emergent.

  • Mow at about a 2-2.5" mowing height.

  • Remove all fallen leaves, or mulch them with your mulching mower.


November

  • Fertilize with 1 pound of nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft.

  • Water 1 inch weekly, if needed.

  • Mow at about a 2" mowing height.

  • Remove all fallen leaves, or mulch them with your mulching mower.


December

  • Water 1 inch weekly, if needed.

  • Mow at about a 2" mowing height.

  • Remove all fallen leaves, or mulch them with your mulching mower.


Other Timely Tips

  • Remember: Fescue likes the shade!

  • Don't use weed killers on windy days.

  • Don't apply weed killers or fertilizer before an expected rain.

  • Don't allow runoff when watering.

  • Remember: A thick, healthy lawn is better able to resist weed growth.
