Cyclamen

Cyclamen blooms

Cyclamen is one of the most popular of all winter-flowering pot plants and its charm is obvious. Compact growth, beautiful swept-back flowers on long stalks and decorative foliage which is patterned in shades of silver and green. The blooms come in bright colors and pastel shades of pink, purple, red, salmon and of course white. With proper care your cyclamen will bloom indoors for several months. Try to buy a plant with plenty of unopened buds.

Secrets of Success:

Temperature: Cool 500-600 F. is ideal.

Light: Bright light away from direct sunlight. A north facing windowsill is usually ideal. The spot must be cool...a warm room means a short life for a cyclamen.

Water: Keep compost moist at all times.

Humidity: Stand pot on a pebble tray or surround with damp peat. Occasionally mist air around the plant.

Special Problems:

Yellowing Foliage: Hot, dry air is usually the culprit. Cyclamen dislike temperatures above 600F. Other possible causes are under watering and direct sunlight.

Plant Collapse: Over-watering, especially from above. Never let water stand on the fleshy crown.

Short Flowering Period: There are many possible reasons...too much warmth, incorrect watering and dry air are common causes. Feed regularly with any all purpose fertilizer during the growing and flowering season.

Care After Flowering: Cyclamen are grown and cultivated for their flowering season. Binding Stevens sells them with that thought in mind, however if you would like to keep your plant and try re-blooming it for next season here are some pointers:

  • Reduce watering and stop fertilizing.
  • Place pot on its side in a cool spot and keep it dry until midsummer.
  • Re-pot using fresh compost, burying the tuber to half its depth.
  • Stand the pot in a cool, well-lit spot.
  • Water to keep the compost moist.
