Dieffenbachia
A well grown dieffenbachia may reach 5' or more. The large and
highly decorative leaves of this plant make it a great favorite with
many. Its common name; Dumb Cane, is derived for the
unpleasant effect of it poisonous sap on the mouth and throat.
Remember to wash your hands after taking cuttings. Dry temperatures
and fluctuating temperatures can be fatal to some delicate varieties.
Temperature:
Average or above average warmth minimum or 600
F. in winter.
Light: Partial shade in summer; bright light in winter.
Water: Regular watering in spring and summer; sparingly in
winter.
Air Humidity: Mist frequently. Surround pot with damp peat.
Wash leaves occasionally.
Repotting: Repot in spring every 1-2 years.
Special Problems
Insects: Keep watch for scale & red spider mite.
Stem base soft & discolored: Stem rot disease. Over-watering
& low temperatures will encourage this condition. If damage is slight,
cut out diseased area. If damage is severe, discard plant.
Lower leaves yellow & wilted: Low winter temperatures or
cold drafts are the most likely reason. Plants will survive below 550
F., but lower leaves will suffer.
Loss of color: Direct sunlight or excessive brightness will
give leaves a washed-out appearance. Move to a shadier spot.
Loss of leaves: Most likely due to temperature too cool, dry
air or cold drafts. Older leaves will drop naturally with age.
Leaves with brown edges: Compost has been allowed to dry
out. It should be kept moist but not soggy at all times. Cold air can
have a similar effect.
