Ficus
Ficus benjamina
The most common of the ficus is the Ficus benjamina also known as
the weeping fig. It is a small leaved, relatively slow growing inside
tree that can get 6-18' tall. Trunks may be multi, single or braided.
Foliage can be solid green or variegated. Fairly easy to grow with
proper light and watering.
Temperature:
Keep at a minimum of 55 degrees in winter.
Light: Ficus benjamina trees like bright, indirect light.
Water: Water with care. Allow the compost to dry out
slightly between waterings.
Humidity: Mist leaves on a regular basis.
Repotting: Avoid regular repotting. They grow slowly,
therefore frequent repotting is not necessary.
Special Problems:
Sudden loss of leaves: The most likely reason is over
watering. Other possibilities are low winter temperatures, too little
light or too much fertilizer. Or even a combination of all of the
above.
Yellowing of leaves: If on the lower part of the plant this
is a natural process. If this is occurring all over the plant
something more serious could be going on. It could be under feeding,
improper watering or a combination of both.
Special Note:
Some legginess will occur as plants age.
