Selecting & Caring For Fruit Trees

Apples...Cherries...Plums...Peaches...Pears
How to Plant:
-
Container trees can be planted
any time of the year. Burlapped trees need to be planted during
their dormant season.
-
Dig a hole at least a foot
wider than the diameter of the root hall.
-
Carefully remove the plant
from the container. Do not lift the tree by its trunk. This can
decrease the chances of survival.
-
If the plant appears to be
root-bound or roots appear tangled, carefully cut them apart with a
sharp knife.
-
Place the plant into the hole
and water in thoroughly. Fill the hole with loosened soil and tamp
gently. Settle the soil with water.
-
Create a 2-3" basin around the
hole to hold the water. Water thoroughly and add a root stimulator.
-
Mulch with pine needles, pine
bark or any organic matter to help prevent weed growth and retain
moisture.
Maintenance:
-
Fertilize spring, summer and early fall during the
first year. After the first year, a soil test should be completed
to see what nutrients are needed.
-
First year fertilizing should be with a transplant
fertilizer such as Ortho Up Start® followed by a
fruit tree stake or Osmocote® later in the season.
-
Water trees for at least two
seasons after planting, and depending on environmental conditions
thereafter. Water 1" or more per week if it has not rained.
-
Remove broken and damaged
branches only. No pruning should be necessary for the first two
growing seasons.
-
Once trees are established,
pruning will help to shape them and prevent infestation of insects
and disease.
-
A consistent spraying schedule is
important for optimum fruiting and overall health of your fruit
tree.
