Ginkgo Tree
Ginkgo biloba

The Gingko has been growing on earth for more than
150 million years! It is often referred to as a living fossil. This
tree deserves a lot of respect, but unfortunately it is under-planted.
These beauties can reach heights of 40-60' with spreads between
20-40'. Make sure you choose a planting site that can handle their
size. The Gingko is pyramidal shaped, and also slow growing. We think
Gingko's should be planted more in the Tulsa area and hope they soon
'catch on'.
When To Plant: Gingko's may be planted in the
spring or the fall.
Where To Plant: It is a widely adaptable
tree. It is heat, pollution and salt tolerant. Just remember to plant
it somewhere where it will have plenty of room to grow. Gingko is also
drought and wind tolerant. Keeping all of this in mind, the Gingko
will grow best when planted in sandy, deep soil with good moisture
retention and good drainage. It also likes full sun.
How To Plant: Dig the planting hole about
twice to three times as large as the root-ball, but no deeper than the
tree sits in the pot. Amend the soil you have dug out of the hole
with Back to Nature or Hu-More. Refill the planting hole with your
amended soil and water in as you fill. Mulch about 2-3" around base
to keep moisture in and hinder weed growth.
Care and Maintenance: The wonderful thing
about a Gingko is it is relatively maintenance free. It does grow
slowly, so be prepared for that. Fertilizing in early spring will help
the tree grow a little more rapidly, and will improve the overall
health of the tree, but don't expect any growth spurts. Drastic
pruning isn't necessary because the tree has strong wood and typically
grows with good branch angles. The Gingko is usually disease and pest
free. Just remember to water during times of drought conditions.
