Helleborus

Also known as Christmas Rose or Lenten Rose this beauty
is fast becoming very popular. Clusters of greenish, white,
pink or purple flowers on fleshy stems. The Christmas Rose
(H.Niger), blooms from about Christmas thru March.
The Lenten Rose (H. orientalis) will bloom from
around February thru April. Of course, these bloom times are
dependent on weather and environmental conditions.
When To Plant: Christmas Rose and Lenten Rose can
be planted when the plants are available in the fall and
spring.
Where To Plant: Plant your Helleborus where it
will get morning sun only. They like moist, well-drained
rich soils. We recommend using Back To Nature® or Hu-More as
a soil amendment. They will only get about 12-18" tall, so
make sure you plant them toward the front of your bed. Mulch
with about a 2-3" layer and make sure they don't dry out
even during the winter months.
How To Plant: Dig your hole about twice the size
of the root ball and no deeper. Handle the root ball with
care because the Helleborus roots are somewhat delicate.
Space your plants about 12-15" apart.
Other Information: Watch for more varieties to
become available in the next couple of years.
