Higan Weeping Cherry

Prunus subhirtella 'Pendula'

If you are looking for a beautiful tree to make a spectacular show in your yard we suggest you try the Higan weeping cherry.  Graceful, weeping, twiggy branches display a wonderful show of deep pink buds that open to a double pale pink flower before the leaves appear in the spring.  This deciduous tree will get about 12-15' tall with a spread of 15-20'.  This cherry tree will not only add beauty but can also add value in the way of curb appeal to your home.

When To Plant:  Plant your cherry tree in very early spring so you can enjoy the beautiful blooms.

Where To Plant:  These trees can withstand full sun; however, they do not like to be in a spot that does not drain well.  Make sure the site you select is well-drained and that your soil has been enriched with compost or a soil amendment such as Back to Nature® or Hu-More®.

How To Plant:  Place in a hole dug about 2-3 times the diameter of the container.  As mentioned before well-drained soil is a must for this tree to thrive.  If you have clay soil (which most of us do in the Tulsa area) we highly recommend amending your soil.  As you replace the soil tamp and water as you go to remove any air pockets in the soil.  Mulch with a 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch, keeping it about an inch away from the trunk.

Care & Maintenance:  Keep your newly planted cherry tree watered in time of drought. Keeping a 2-3" layer of mulch around the tree also helps hold in moisture as well as hinder weed growth.

We also suggest since the prunus species is prone to borer damage that you start a preventative spray routine in early April.  Our product of choice is Green Light Borer Killer.  Apply it liberally to the bark of the tree as well as the leaves and undersides of leaves.  As always, follow all manufacturer recommendations when using any pesticide.

It is not necessary but some people like to keep their trees pruned to a more uniform shape around the bottom.   They can occasionally get stray branches that grow upward that may also be pruned to give the tree a more 'manicured' look.
