Indian
Blanket Flower

The Indian Blanket was approved as Oklahoma's official
state wildflower in 1986. Also known as Gaillardia this is a
beauty that should be in every garden. The large, showy
flowers (about 2-3" in diameter) begin to bloom in May and
usually continue until September. You will be amazed at the
intricate colors of this beautiful flower. Indian Blanket
will get about 1-1 ½' tall and has
about a 1-2' spread.
The story behind the name is that an Indian blanket maker
on his deathbed wove a blanket with his favorite colors of
red, brown and yellow for his burial. The following spring
the man's grave was said to be covered with beautiful
flowers in the same colors of his blanket. Hence the name
'Indian Blanket'.
When To Plant: Container grown Indian Blanket may
be planted in the spring or early summer. You may also plant
them by seed in the fall or early spring.
Where To Plant: Plant your gaillardia where it
will get lots of sun. They can tolerate some drought after
established, but flower best when kept evenly moist. They
also do well in containers and window boxes.
How To Plant: Space your plants about 12" apart
for a mass planting. Moisture is crucial during the first
year, but allow them to dry out between waterings.
Care and Maintenance: Deadheading the spent flower
will keep the plant neater looking and encourage more
blooming. Let a few of the flowers go to seed to encourage
seed distribution.
