Japanese Maples
Acer palmatum

These beauties have become a popular addition to
Tulsa landscapes, and for good reason! Their beautiful foliage and
graceful appearance can make a vocal point out of the most drab corner
in your landscape. Add a couple of flats of beautiful blooming annuals
and you’ve got a gardeners’ oasis right in your own yard. Just keep in
mind, a Japanese maple in the Tulsa area requires afternoon shade.
They will keep their color with some good morning sun, but the hot
Oklahoma afternoons will burn the foliage. Your Japanese maple also
needs some protection from harsh winds.
You will find many books and articles that tell
you they can withstand full sun…trust us, they cannot! There are many
distinct genus-species of Japanese maples: one is called Acer palmatum
which has leaves more like the traditional Japanese maple and another
is Acer palmatum dissectum which is the lacy leaved variety. Yet
another is Acer shirasawanum which has a fatter leaf, but it is not
lacey.
Planting:
To plant your Japanese maple dig the hole about twice the size of
the root ball. If you are planting it under another tree be careful
not to damage the roots of the larger tree. If you have poor soil,
amend it with Back To Nature® to give your tree a good start. Water
slowly and thoroughly while back-filling. Mulch with a good 2-3"
layer avoiding getting the mulch right up next to the trunk of the
tree. If your tree is in balled and burlapped form, completely remove
the burlap before placing in the hole.
Care and Maintenance:
- Japanese maples can be pruned to fit your design and purpose.
- Light pruning can be done any time of the year.
- Heavy pruning may be done early in the spring, or late winter
while they are still dormant. Keep in mind never to take off more
that ⅓ at a time.
- Mulching is a must because of their shallow root systems.
- Feed once in the spring with a good all-purpose fertilizer.
- Leaf scorch can occur by the sun and the wind. This is the
reason site protection is important.
