Most mums are hardy perennials. With just a
few easy steps you can get your Mums to come back bigger and
stronger and more beautiful year after year.
-
Plant your mums in full sun with
well-drained garden soil.
-
Keep evenly moist, not soggy, please
don't let them dry out.
-
Cut back stems to 2" above the ground
when the plant dies back for winter.
-
Mulch the top of the plants with about a
2-3" layer of shredded cedar or cypress.
-
Next spring, remove the mulch and spread
it around the base of the plant. When plants are
actively gro
wing,
pinch the tips when they are at least 2" long. Pinching
keeps the plants shorter, fuller and gives them a nice
shape. Repeat the pinching 2-3 times, but not after
July 15th.
-
At this point you just want to keep them
watered so you will have beautiful flowers for fall.
-
You will be amazed at how much fuller
your bush is and more importantly how many more buds and
flowers you will have!
-
If you want to try something new...how
about the My Favorite Mum®?
They require less pinching and pruning and will grow
into a huge plant with massive numbers of blooms in just
one season.
-
Also...try mixing mushroom compost into
your soil. We think you will be pleasantly surprised at
the result!
