The 'New' Bradford Pears

Pyrus calleryana

The Bradford Pear tree, as beautiful as it is, is for the most part a weak tree for this part of Oklahoma.  Our high winds and hard rains can cause damage beyond repair.  We are now recommending more improved pear varieties that look just as beautiful as the Bradford but are much stronger trees.  A few varieties we like are the 'Capital', 'Cleveland Select', 'Aristocrat' and 'Chanticleer'.  These trees have the same attributes as the beloved Bradford without the weakness.

Capital:  This tree has handsome columnar form with showy  white blooms early in the spring.  An excellent tree for narrower spaces.  Grows 35-40' with a 12-15' spread.

Cleveland Select:  A distinctive columnar form makes this a great choice for a street or yard planting.  Gleaming white blooms in early spring.  Glossy green foliage turns to purplish-rChanticleer Peared orange in fall.  Moderate grower to 40' tall with a spread of about 15-20'.

Aristocrat:  A beautiful pyramidal ornamental pear with strong branching and very high quality foliage that shimmers.  Height 40-50' and about 40' wide.  (Pictured Above)

Chanticleer:  A fine upright pyramidal form that is a little narrower than the Bradford.  This tree flowers heavily and has beautiful fall color in a reddish purple hue.  (Pictured at right)

Care of these trees is the same as the Bradford.  They prefer rich, well-drained soil but can stand poorer, clay soils as well.  After established they can also take some abuse, and can withstand drought.  It is advised to give them plenty of water the first two years after planting.  A good 2-3" layer of mulch helps hold in moisture and hinder weed growth.  They can be planted in full sun and make beautiful street trees.
